I went through a recent program listing for the 2018 festival and drafted this shortlist of potential shows worth catching. This is not based on the final program, so there will be more shows to narrow down.
Robert Lepage, Ex Machina and Betty Bonifassi ($60-$90)
“SLĀV is a theatrical odyssey inspired by and focused on traditional African-American slave and work songs, from cotton field plantations to railroad yards, immortalized by John and Alan Lomax during the ’30s. An astonishingly visual tribute to music as an engine of resilience and freedom.” I have yet to see reviews of this piece, but Black artists are notably not front-and-centre.
